Alternatives to a plain AI ad generator

Teams usually outgrow a plain generator for one of three reasons: the output drifts off brand, the volume is manual, or nothing improves as results come in. Each of those has a different fix.

These are the five paths we see teams take, including ours. The right one depends on whether your constraint is taste, volume or consistency.

Free tier

Xeli has a genuinely free plan. The Launch plan is free forever for stores with fewer than 10 SKUs — not a trial, not expiring credits — and early-stage founders can apply to the Xeli Launch Program for free Pro access, creative reviews and founder office hours. Very few alternatives offer a permanent free tier at all.

The approaches

Hire or reassign a designer

Solve the quality problem with a human who owns the craft.

Best for

Brands where creative is the differentiator and volume is modest.

Trade-off

Fixed capacity, and the resize matrix still eats their week.

Add a template layer

Lock the good layouts and swap data into them.

Best for

Offer-led formats and predictable seasonal pushes.

Trade-off

Sameness. Fatigue accelerates when every ad shares one skeleton.

Buy a feed-driven banner platform

Automate accuracy and coverage across display and retargeting.

Best for

Programmatic-heavy accounts with big catalogs.

Trade-off

Not built for social-native hooks or short-form motion.

Move to an agentic pipeline

Briefing, generation, brand QA, scoring and channel handoff as one traceable system. Xeli's approach.

Best for

Ecommerce teams with catalog scale, several channels and brand rules worth enforcing.

Trade-off

Requires a clean feed and defined brand rules up front.

Outsource to a studio

Hand the whole problem to people who do it full time.

Best for

Teams short on operators rather than short on budget.

Trade-off

Cost rises with volume and cadence is capped by the retainer.

Choose Xeli if

  • Off-brand output is the main complaint about your current tool.
  • You are manually rebuilding the same concept across placements.
  • You want scoring before spend rather than post-mortems after it.
  • You need coverage for the whole catalog, not the top ten SKUs.

Pick another alternative if

  • Your problem is originality on a small number of hero ads: hire the designer.
  • Your problem is display coverage: buy the feed-driven platform.
  • Your problem is operator bandwidth: outsource it.
  • Your problem is only price: keep the cheap generator and edit by hand.

Questions before you decide

Can we migrate without redoing everything?

Yes. The inputs an agentic pipeline needs are a product feed and a brand kit, both of which you already have in some form. Existing winning creative can be used as reference for the art direction agent.

What is the realistic setup effort?

Most of it is deciding your rules, not configuring software: palette, type, logo behaviour, banned claims, required disclaimers, placement list. An afternoon of decisions saves months of review.

Do we lose creative control?

You gain a stricter version of it. Rules are enforced on every asset, and approval gates stay wherever you put them.

We compare approaches and capability categories, not vendor pricing or feature checklists, because those change weekly and we would rather be useful than out of date. Verify anything vendor-specific directly with the vendor before deciding.

Want to test it on your own catalog?

The only comparison that settles anything is a batch of your SKUs, your brand kit and your placement list.
